More than 100 attendees - including COST participants - met in Istanbul for the 2005 Turkey Training Courses, Workshops and Symposia, held from 29th August to 2nd September on the Bosphurus.

We have gained much encouragement and momentum for SAN through the spirit of the Turkey event.

An expression of thanks to all those who contributed to making our first SAN meeting such a pleasant and rewarding experience both scientifically and socially.

A thank you for Dr. Tanju Surmeli - the local host and organiser - for choosing the splendid setting in a celebrated hotel with spectacular facilities for swimming and watching the sunset, and a banquet three times a day, all for the remarkable price of up to 55 Euros a day. I doubt that these opportunities will be rivalled in the future.

A thank you to Edwin Verstraeten who undertook the responsibility of looking after the not inconsiderable day by day on site duties to make the meeting run harmoniously.  This he achieved with customary equanimity.

A thank you to our Canadian visitors Susan Diamond and Lynda and Michael Thompson for their excellent teaching towards our workshop and certification programme, and also for their enthusiastic support of the aims of SAN, contributions to the symposia, and for taking out membership of SAN.

A thank you to Juri Kropotov, Beverly Steffert and Lesley Parkinson, who also contributed to our workshop programme with characteristic vigour.

Special thanks to Roy John for his three presentations during the week, his enthusiasm as a member of our Advisory Council, and his commitment shown by already firming up collaborative studies with many of us, including plans for an EEG-neurofeedback study together with his wife Leslie Pritchep.

A thank you to others who contributed to our symposia. From Turkey, Erol Basar and Sirel Karakas, and from Austria, Christa Neuper: a thank you for their outstanding contributions. Guests Anatole Lécuyer from France, Hartmut Heinrich from Germany, Erwin Hartsuiker representing instrumentation companies, and our members Ute Strehl, Jordan Pop-Jordanov and Nada Pop-Jordanova, Bev Steffert, Martin Batty, Tanju Surmeli, Numan Ermutlu, Juri Kropotov and Marco Congedo for planning a symposium.

Behind the scenes before the meeting much initial work was done, especially by Council members David Vernon and Patricia Bellinghausen.

I will be in contact with you shortly about the new initiatives for 2006.

With best wishes,

John Gruzelier
