2006 SAN Council Elections

It's time to elect the SAN Council for the term 2006-2008! Council elections will be held in September via electronic ballot. SAN has contracted votenet.com to conduct the 2006 Council Elections. The electronic balloting is an attempt to put SAN on the cutting edge of technology by providing members an alternate and a fast and efficient way to vote. The benefits for members are savings of time, paper, and cost of postage. We hope it will encourage the greatest number of our members to vote.

You must have been an SAN member in good standing on 26 August 2006 to be eligible to vote. To cast your electronic ballot, you will be requested to enter a password which has been sent to all active members.

Byelaws Amendment

This election will also include a supplementary ballot proposition concerning a proposed change in the SAN Byelaws.

It has been proposed, in accordance to Article II of the SAN Byelaws, to include a provision to the effect that if only one valid nomination is received for any office by the closing of nominations -  if a candidate is running unopposed –, the nominee should be "elected" to the office in question, without any actual voting taking place. At the moment, voter consent must be obtained, even if there is one single nomination for an office, which is considered a waste of resources.

Article X. "Nominations and Elections" of the current Bylaws read:

1) The Nominations Committee shall be appointed by the President and shall prepare a ballot of candidates for vacant Council positions.

2) The Nominations Committee shall nominate at least one candidate for each vacancy on the Council. No member of the Nominations Committee is eligible to be nominated for any elected position.

3) The Nominations Committee shall oversee the elections.

4) Elections shall be carried out by members eligible to vote. Voting shall be by mail, electronic ballot or at the Annual Meeting.

5) A majority vote shall constitute an election. The nominees receiving the highest number of votes shall be declared elected. In case of a tie, the choice shall be decided by lot.

6) The schedule for nominations and balloting shall be determined by the Council and announced to the membership.

The proposed amendment would add the following section to Article X:

“6) Candidates running unopposed shall be considered elected by acclamation.”

The current Section 6) would be renumbered to 7.
